Coral Springs will soon become home to a plethora of fresh fruits
and vegetables.
For the first time ever, the city will have its own Green Market.
Starting February 3 and every Sunday till April 13, the city will
unveil the Green Market at Downtown Coral Springs. The market will
feature fresh, locally grown produce, baked goods, flowers, and other
related natural food items each Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the
Coral Springs City Hall, 9551 W. Sample Road.
The mission of the Green Market at Downtown Coral Springs is to provide
a Green Market experience enhanced with locally grown products and
activities that benefit the community, the vendor and the consumer
alike.
“The concept of the market is to promote the whole green concept,”
said Tom Messenheimer, Director of the Sportsplex.
Besides an assortment of fresh produce, dried pastas, baked goods,
and gourmet food, the market will provide booths with educational
information on health and entertainment including cultural performances
and local artists.
“There will be many booths that will offer information on energy
savings, nutrition, and eating local produce and products,”
he said. “Eating healthy is a big aspect of it.”
The idea for a Green Market sparked after city officials noted the
success of other neighboring cities’ markets.
“There are a number of other communities in the area that have
a green market. We brought up the idea a year ago that the city might
want to pursue having its own. And this year we put it in the business
plan,” Messenheimer said.
Eventually, the Green Market will be a focal point of the city’s
downtown development and if successful the Market may become a staple
in the community.
“If it’s successful it will be a longer season next
year and an annual event,” he said.
