The city of Parkland has decided to clean its city vehicles while remaining environmentally friendly.

The city recently purchased a product called Ultra Luster, which is a waterless car wash in the form of a liquid spray.

“We were able to test the product on one of our vehicles. The product worked well and appears to be cost effective,” said Jim Berkman, Public Works Director for the City of Parkland. “Though the product is a bit more labor intensive than our current method, we believe that its water conservation and cost savings benefit will balance out over time.”

Berkman said the product will be primarily used to clean the city’s pick-up trucks, heavy duty trucks, and light equipment and will re-enforce the city’s commitment to the environment and conserving water.

“We are confident that the implementation of this product will enhance the City’s water conservation efforts and hopefully promote the use of these kinds of products throughout the community. To that end, I think this fits well into the City’s environmental program which encourages the use of products and technologies that are environmentally friendly. As per our City logo, we are Environmentally Proud,” Berkman said.

But how does Ultra Luster work?

All you have to do is spray the liquid cleaner on your car, wipe the dirt off and then use another rag to buff it out. David DuHamel, Regional Manager for Ultra Luster could not disclose the ingredients because it is patented, however he said it is an acrylic based cleaner.

“All in one shot, it cleans, polishes and puts on a protective coat,” said DuHamel.

DuHamel said the city of Parkland has been at the forefront of saving the environment.

“Every time someone turns a hose on to wash a car, they are using a minimum of 200 gallons of water,” he said. “It’s great that the city of Parkland is being the front runner in this. They are setting an example for people in the community.”

The city of Coral Springs may be the next to purchase the product. Ultra Luster was introduced to Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook and he is very interested, according to DuHamel. The next step is meeting with the city manager.

“We’re still in the introductory stages. We’re making the product available to the cities and towns and eventually we want all of Broward County to be conscious of water abuse and restrictions,” he said.

Bentley’s Auto Services Inc. in Coral Springs is one local business that uses the product on its cars.

“We got it two months ago. One of my clients showed it to me and I thought it was truly amazing,” said owner Bentley Lewis. “It really works quite well. I use it on my cars, the cars I work on and I show it to my customers. It does a great job with minimal effort and you don’t have to use water. Once you see it, it kind of speaks for itself.”
