SERVING THE CITIES OF CORAL SPRINGS, PARKLAND AND COCONUT CREEK

The Friendly Mayor

Published March 13th, 2008

As mayor and a father of five, I’m so proud to live and work in Coral Springs. For the third year in a row, Coral Springs has been named one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People” by America’s Promise, the Alliance for Youth. I am grateful to our employees and countless volunteers who contribute so much to our community’s future. I want to thank Pat Mirabello for helping to recruit and train mentors for community youth and Jenny Rebour from the Police Department for her efforts to help the great young people that live in our community, too.

The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts returns to Coral Springs shortly and I hope to see you all there. This year’s festival is set for March 15 and 16 at The Walk. Shirley Richards and the entire team of volunteers for the festival will showcase the works of more than 200 artists from across the country. I want to thank all the volunteers, artists and sponsors in advance that will be part of this event.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the Building Department in their successful workshops. The first one was held in January and the next one is coming up on Tuesday, March 18. I also want to thank Vice Mayor Vince Boccard for his support as well as the entire Commission for these workshops to occur. At this meeting, architects, contractors and homeowners will learn about screen enclosures, pools and fences. Participants must reserve their spot. The location will be determined at a closer date. For more information, please call 954-344-1041.

I recently attended the City’s Business Success Day at the Northwest Regional Library. There were over 100 teens there who learned about resume writing, career opportunities and ways to get involved with our community. I want to thank Regina Price and Kiwanis for helping to make this event a success. For more assistance for the future of your teenager, please look at the site, www.CSTeensundecided.com.

Our Family Movie Night on Saturday, March 22 at 7 p.m. at Betti Stradling Park will feature the classic Roger Rabbit. In April, our Family Concert Series comes to an end with Jimmy Stowe and the Stoweaways. This band will feature Jimmy Buffet style beach music on Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at Betti Stradling Park, 10301 Wiles Road. The movie night and concert are both free, and you’re welcome to bring your lawn chairs and coolers. For more information, please call 954-345-2200.

As always, please visit coralsprings.org for City news and visit our Event Calendar to view the Mayor’s and Commissioners’ scheduled office hours. Feel free to email me at sbrook@coralsprings.org if there is anything I can help you with. Please remember that we are looking to recognize creative talent that live in Coral Springs and to let us know of anyone you know that should be recognized at a City Commission meeting. We recently spotlighted Nicholas Marks, a classic Flamenco guitarist, whose music has touched and inspired so many Coral Springs residents, including myself.

Have a Great Day, Your Friendly Mayor,

Scott Brook
