At almost 3,000 students, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland might be considered one of the largest high schools in Broward County.
With that title also comes overcrowded classrooms. “We’re critically overcrowded,” said Ann Andersen-Kowalski, principal of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
To ease overcrowding, the school will add two buildings to its campus. One will be a three-story 30 room building for general classes. Another building will be a one-story 6 room science lab. Kowalski said there is no projected date for construction to begin due to a delay in the permitting process.
The Parkland principal says the new buildings are vital because students are currently taking classes in portables.
“Currently we have under 3,100 students. We have 38 portables now. When the buildings are built, we will be losing some of our portables,” she said. “This will be a wonderful addition because we will have new and up-to-date classrooms and science labs that will only enhance our school. We hope it will begin soon.”
