Temple Beth Torah To Host “Concert & Dessert Spectacular

Published February 14th, 2008

For the first time in South Florida, the jubilant sounds of a professional klezmer band will be paired with the riveting voices of three internationally-acclaimed Cantors in a celebration of Jewish music, capped with a Viennese dessert reception.
The event will be held at Temple Beth Torah, Tamarac Feb. 17.
“This is not just another concert,” said event chair Dr. Mark A. Gendal. “It’s rare to find this level of professional musicians and cantorial soloists together on one stage, mixing it up to create an experience that will have the audience on its feet. We invite people to bring their kids, to introduce them to their Jewish musical heritage, and to bring the grandparents to rekindle wonderful memories from their own childhoods. It’s going to be an evening of truly first-class entertainment, followed by an incredible dessert reception featuring all sorts of gourmet items like bananas foster.”
Doors open at 6 p.m. for cocktails (cash bar) and mingling. The concert begins at 7 p.m., followed by the complimintary Viennese dessert reception at 8:30 p.m.
Among the well-known musicians performing as a “Rockin’ Klezmer Band” at the concert are pianist Gary Lawrence, violinist Alexander-Mikhay Lousky, drummer Randy Stevens and Mike Gold on clarinet. The three widely-celebrated Cantors performing are tenors Isaac Salinas and Cesar Yosef Beleniski and baritone David Feuer. Cuban-born Isaac Salinas, who has recorded 17 CDs, has performed as a recitalist and opera singer live and on radio and television throughout North and South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Israel, including international music festivals in Vienna, Rumania, Mexico, Israel and the U.S. and at Carnegie Hall in New York. His eclectic repertoire includes Hebrew, Sephardic and Yiddish Folklore songs, Hebrew and Jewish liturgical songs, Opera, Zarzuela (Spanish and Cuban), Symphony, Oratorio, Classic Art songs, Italian and Neapolitan songs, Cuban, Mexican, French, Latin American, American songs and Spirituals.
David Feuer has made recordings of classical and modern Hazzanut, Israeli and Yiddish folk songs, melodies for children, and a recording of High Holidays, Hanukah and Shabbat music. He has devoted himself to the revival of old, traditional melodies for different Festivals, Shabbat and Holy Days. He composes prolifically and his songs are popular with young and old throughout Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia and the U.S. Cantor Feuer has Sheliah Tzibur at Temple Emanu-El in Palm Beach since 1986.
Cesar Yosef Beleniski first sang in a synagogue in 1946 when, at age 5, he was taken by his grandfather to sing before a group of Rabbis and Cantors at Temple Paso, Argentina’s largest temple. He was hailed as “another Pavarotti”, proclaimed a protégé and invited to serve as one of Temple Paso’s Cantors, even though he had no formal training at the time.  He served in that capacity until adolescence. He then trained at Temple Libertad, was soloist with the famed Azimir Choir under the direction of Bernardo Feuer, and performed in operas as a hobby. He served as Cantor at Temple Max Nordav, Comunidad Dor Jadash and is currently Cantor at Temple Beth Torah.
Tickets for the Feb. 17 concert and desert reception are $18 for general admission, $50 for reserved seating, and $100 for reserved seating with program recognition. For tickets and information, call 954-721-7660, ext. 110.
